Diabetes in younger patients
Resource Description

This 1 hour and 8-minute webinar by Primary Health Tasmania is on understanding and management of Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes in younger patients.

Paediatric Endocrine and metabolic health, including diabetes mellitus, as a core component of Australian general practice. GPs play an important role in the early diagnosis, ongoing management and coordination of care for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of type 1 diabetes in children and young adults is comparatively high compared to older people and cases of early-onset type 2 diabetes are increasing rapidly. GPs must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to appropriately screen for, diagnose and manage these conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication to the parents of children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with other relevant health providers (such as Paeditricians, Endocrinologists, diabetic educators and dieticians) to appropriately manage the patient’s condition/s.
  • Demonstrate appropriate examination skills relating to diabetes in children.
  • Recognise and appropriately diagnose and manage the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents.
  • Appropriately identify and manage life-threatening conditions associated with type 1 diabetes in children.
