Mental Health Update and Education series, Session Six: A practical guide to managing depression in older adults 

The third in the series is a 87 minute interactive session blending clinical and service updates with a focus on major depressive disorder in older people  

The Mental Health Education Series is an series of mental health events for GPs with the dual purpose of keeping GPs informed about changes in the Tasmanian mental healthcare landscape, alongside providing interesting and relevant clinical education delivered by local mental health clinicians. These events will provide an opportunity for GPs to have cross-disciplinary dialogue.  

This session presented a refresher on identifying and managing major depressive disorder in older people. The session explored the diagnostic overshadow that can occur with the challenges of ageing and comorbid dementia, and consider pragmatic approaches to these dilemmas. It also highlighted the most common issues in psychological and pharmacological treatments. 

The session was delivered by Dr Matthew Fasnacht. 

 Dr Fasnacht  is an Old Age Psychiatrist. He graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2001,  and has been a consultant psychiatrist since 2010. He is the Statewide Specialty Director for the Older Persons Mental Health Service
